About

We who organize this fundraising are an informal group of individuals and comrades of Ragnheiður and Jórunn. Together we form a group that is under the banner Að standa upp (To stand up) and our main platform the website www.adstandaupp.com.

We consider it of great importance to stand with those who go beyond their daily routine to resist oppressive power structures and mechanisms that tear down human dignity and life just in order to divide and rule.

We share a common ideal of a brighter world where people's lives are not valued by where they were born or their skin color. Day after day, people are fighting for their lives on borders around the world, especially on the borders of Western nations, and we believe it is necessary to stand in solidarity with them, while also defending the freedom to do so. Authorities across Europe are punishing people for exercising this freedom, and the case of Ragnheiður and Jórunn is just one example of many.

The case of Jórunn and Ragnheiður ended in the Land's Court in November 2020, after more than four years of uncertainty. The two were originally charged in four counts before the Reykjavík District Court, two years after trying to stop the deportation of Eze Okafor at Keflavík Airport.

The district court acquitted them on one occasion: for having endangered the safety of the aircraft. The Land's court acquitted them in addition for having caused disruption to air travel.

The District Court had stated without further justification that "freedom of expression and assembly [are \] subject to certain restrictions and cannot justify the conduct of the accused." This is something that the Land's Court revoked and Ragnheiður's lawyer said in a conversation with Vísir after the verdict that "the ruling will set a precedent for freedom of expression in the country." The verdict was that Jórunn and Ragnheiður were to be on probation for two years and that the sentence would be suspended if fulfilled. In support, the court refers not only to their freedom of expression, but also to the fact that there was a "significant delay" in the process of case. The charge "was not issued until almost two and a half years after the incident and now it is well into the fifth year since it took place." In addition to the probation, they were sentenced to pay half of the defence salary, a total of over a million ISK each.

Due to Covid-19, it has been difficult to organize fundraising events, so it has been decided to start a fundraiser through the Karolina crowd funding platform for the money that remains to be collected. Any thing beyond the amount needed will be donated to other activists currently fighting the legal system in Iceland for solidarity actions with migrants.

Solidarity is our weapon!
No more deportations!
