WHY A TWO-DAY PARALEGAL WORKSHOP?
The workshop will take place over two days, giving participants time not only to learn basic legal principles, but also to discuss real-life situations, practise appropriate responses, and build connections with others who can provide support when repression occurs. The aim is to create a space where legal knowledge is shared collectively and translated into practical tools that participants can take back to their communities.
The first day will focus on understanding rights and legal procedures, including what people should know when facing police intervention, questioning, arrest, detention, investigation, or prosecution. The second day will focus on practical response and collective support: how to accompany someone facing repression, when and how to seek legal assistance, how to document incidents responsibly, how to verify and communicate information, and how to develop mutual-aid mechanisms within our communities.
The workshop is not intended to turn participants into lawyers. Instead, we want to build a basic level of collective legal literacy and preparedness—so that when repression occurs, people are less vulnerable to fear, confusion, intimidation, and isolation. By strengthening knowledge, relationships, and practical skills before a crisis happens, we hope to help communities respond with greater confidence, care, and solidarity.
WHAT WILL PARTICIPANTS LEARN?
Across the two days, participants will work with lawyers, legal workers, activists, and experienced organisers to develop practical knowledge around fundamental legal rights; arrest, detention, questioning, and investigation procedures; what to do when someone is arrested, detained, or otherwise targeted; when and how to seek legal assistance; basic principles of providing first-line support; how to document and communicate cases of repression responsibly; building community-based legal support networks; and strengthening mutual aid and collective preparedness.
A central part of the workshop will be a critical examination of Indonesia’s new Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP), which came into effect on 2 January 2026. Participants will explore changes affecting the rights of suspects, defendants, witnesses, and victims, alongside changes to police powers, coercive measures, detention, investigation procedures, and other key criminal-procedure mechanisms. The new KUHAP represents a significant shift in Indonesia’s criminal justice framework. Rather than treating criminal procedure as something that only lawyers need to understand, the workshop aims to make these changes accessible to communities most likely to encounter the criminal justice system. Participants will be encouraged to read, question, discuss, and critically assess the new provisions—including the protections they provide, the powers and procedures they introduce, and what these changes may mean in practice for people facing criminalisation or repression. Ultimately, we want participants to leave not only with information, but with practical tools, stronger networks, and greater confidence to support one another.
MUTUAL AID, NOT INDIVIDUAL SURVIVAL
When repression happens, the person targeted is rarely the only person affected. Families may suddenly need support, friends may need help locating someone who has been detained, and legal assistance may be urgently required. Information needs to be verified and communicated, while practical needs—such as transportation, food, documents, or simply having someone present—can become immediate concerns. This is why legal education and mutual aid belong together: communities need not only to know their rights, but also to know how to respond collectively when those rights are threatened.
No one should have to face repression alone. Our two-day Paralegal Workshop is a small but meaningful step toward building that collective capacity. Through the workshop, participants will gain practical legal knowledge that can be shared and carried back into their communities, strengthening local networks of support long after the workshop ends. We are crowdfunding to make this space possible and to ensure that legal knowledge is not limited to those who already have access to resources. Your contribution helps turn knowledge into collective preparedness, and solidarity into practical support when it is needed most.

HELP US BUILD COLLECTIVE DEFENCE
Repression can happen at any time. Our response should not begin with panic, isolation, or silence. It should begin with preparation, knowledge, solidarity, and care—with the confidence that we can face difficult moments together and support one another when rights and freedoms are under threat.
Support our two-day Paralegal Workshop. Your contribution will help create a space where essential legal knowledge can be shared collectively, practical skills can be strengthened, and participants can carry what they learn back into their grassroots communities. By investing in legal education, we help build communities that are better prepared to respond, document, seek support, and stand together when repression occurs.
One person knowing their rights is useful. A community knowing how to support one another is stronger. Together, we can strengthen networks of care, solidarity, and collective action so that people are not left to face repression alone. Support the workshop and help us build knowledge that travels, solidarity that lasts, and communities that are prepared.
